Career Paths

This past week I have learned so many new things about career paths I can take in science. To be honest, I'm not quite sure what I want to do anymore. For a while I was super passionate about people and helping others so the medical field really interested me. Then I began to think maybe research could be a cool job and researched more on neuroscience research. However, as I thought more and more about my future I didn't really want to spend my whole life in the lab. As fun as it seems now the repetition and continual failures before an outcome does not seem the best fit for me. At this point I was really lost. However, as Ms. Jacques continued to talk about career paths in science I became interested in nursing. I always said I never wanted to be a nurse because I seen nurses working in hospitals and knew that was not a job for me. However, as I did some research nurses can work in almost any field of healthcare which was really cool because then they are not stuck in area of healthcare for the rest of their career. Also, nurses can continue their education to become nurse practitioners, nurse anesthetist, neonatal nurse and more! I also like how the schooling for a nurse was not a huge commitment and much less expensive than pursuing medical school. All of these possibilities seemed practical and something I would enjoy. So, as I continue my search for future careers I think I will consider nursing as an option along with the other endless possibilities of science.

Health Careers Fair

Yesterday, I went to the Health Careers Fair at Washington University St. Louis. The event was only in the morning and consisted of a fair, panel, and lunch. During the fair there was booths set up around the gymnasium with different healthcare careers like pharmacy, pediatrics, nursing, physical therapy, audiology, and many more. I really enjoyed the pediatrics booth because they had a lot of hands on activities. I was able to look inside the ear and the eye, as well as give a baby mannequin chest compressions and oxygen. Besides getting to try different things the booth was super informative compared to the others. Following the fair was a discussion about gene editing. My favorite part of the discussion was the perspective of a scientist and an ethics professional. Gene editing creates a lot of controversy about whether it is ethical to alter these genes to create the “designer babies”. Semester Project

Pieces of my semester project are starting to come together. After a few stumbles I developed a new idea that I'm really excited about. With my new interest of landscape architecture and architecture in general I want to learn more about the design process and creating my own project/portfolio. I first looked up design competitions to spark some thoughts about concepts and places to create a design for. Unfortuniatly, I am too young to enter into the competitions but I found two really interesting projects that I hope to create a design for. One was a co-living environment in Rome that revives the culture and community within a housing building. The other project was designing a building that poets can come to in Latvia. Sounds pretty specific right, but the idea focus is keeping things sustainable and promoting green buildings. So, I´m hoping in my design I can also create a landscape area outside. Festival of Nations Preserves Culture and the Environment

Over the past weekend my mom, friend Kate, and I went to the Festival of Nations in Tower Grove Park. The past few years I noticed the festival was conscious of waste and promoted recycling and composting of food materials. This year I was determined to see how the festival was doing their part to not only make awareness of new cultures but also the environment. Scattered around the park where waste stations with large yellow compost bins as well as recycling cans but only a few trash cans. This made me wonder what their intentions where for recycling and compost. Each year they set a goal to reduce waste and increase recycling. This year their goal was to recycle 60% of their waste to reduce waster going into the area landfills. Since, the start of the festival in 2011 they have diverted 36.8 tons of waste from landfills.
